Abstract

A folder of various book reviews for Ron Hansen's novel "Atticus." There are newspaper articles and photocopies of reviews for the English and German versions of the book. There is also a copy of the Santa Clara Magazine with an excerpt from the novel.

Münster. The article title translates to, "Activities and Achievements of the Jesuits in the Field of Astronomy in the 19th Century (1814-1904)."

Abstract Taroc developed in Italy, apparently as early as the 1300's. It used a pack of 73 or 74 cards: the 52 we have come to call standard plus 21 or 22 tarot cards as trumps. This deck has the clown as the first of those 21 and then fables as the other 20. Abstract I presume that we found these at Black Swan in Oakland. I found an offer on German Ebay guessing that these were done in 1935-40. The verse reads "Wann Dein Spiel der Gegner preiset,/ Dann gieb doppelt auf Dich Acht,/ Und erinn're Dich des Raben,/ Den zuletzt der Fuchs verlacht." That is, "When your opponent praises your play, pay doubly close attention to yourself and remember the crow, on whom the fox had the last laugh." I am tempted--but afraid--to clean and polish up this old coin. Who knows what circumstances ever gave rise to the distributing of a coin like this!

The first surprise in this calendar is its size: 4' x 17½"! Each month gets its share of a couple of lively leftist-leaning fables in block letters with art that I cannot begin to understand. I presume that the art is not related to the fables. Here is an ephemeral find of the first order!

Here is an unopened race game with the cellophane wrap still intact. The bottom of the box announces proudly that in 1979, "Hare and Tortoise" was chosen as the first "Spiel des Jahres" winner. The hare on the cover features an earring, but so far back in his long ear that you might not notice it!

A photocopy of the book "Hitler: Eine Biographie" written by Joachim C. Fest. The photocopied pages were stored in an envelope which was airmailed to Ron Hansen from Munchen. Some of the pages have handwritten notes on them. Also stored in the envelope is a postcard sent to Ron Hansen with a note.
